Call for proposals 2017

Call for Network Institute Academy Assistant projects

Apply for interdisciplinary research projects with 2 student-assistants
Deadline 9 June 2016 at 12.00pm (noon)

The VU University Academy Assistants program is now entering its eighth year. Initially funded through a KNAW grant and aimed at combining social sciences and computer science research, it has since been adopted by the Network Institute and opened up for other interdisciplinary projects which fall within the research themes of the institute. The Academy Assistants program aims at interesting high-potential master students in conducting scientific research and pursuing an academic career. Last year, the program received more than 14 proposals of which 8 were funded. This year, the program will be able to fund a minimum of 6 projects.

This is a call for new proposals to start from October 2017 onwards. The program brings together scientists from different disciplines; therefore the topics of new projects must combine methods and themes from two different disciplines affiliated with the Network Institute. For each awarded project, the program funds two student research assistants for a period of ten months. The intended outcome of the projects should be papers and/or research proposals

We are looking for supervisors who want to take on a project and have a research topic in mind that benefits from an interdisciplinary approach. If you are interested in participating in this program, please send us a short research proposal as outlined in the template proposal (download here).

Send completed proposals to:, before 9 June 2017 at 12.00pm. An independent committee will evaluate the proposals; subsequent notification of the committee decision will be given at the Network Institute End-Of-Year event on 27 June and subsequently by email.

Quick facts:

  • Project applications should should combine at least two disciplines that are part of the Network Institute;
  • Project applications should be joint work of two (and not more than two) Network Institute researchers; applicants are also sole supervisors of the proposed project;
  • Any member of the Network Institute with research FTE’s over the project period (from PhD student to full professor) can apply;
  • A maximum of one project per supervisor will be awarded (although it is allowed to submit multiple proposals);
  • Funding for two student assistants for ten months at one day per week;
  • Submission before 9 June 2017 at 12.00pm;
  • Decision by 27 June 2017.
